Call for papers – Third Annual RUCARR Conference

The research platform RUCARR – Russia and the Caucasus Regional Research – have Russia and the Caucasus as geographical areas of primary concern. Research focus is on political, social, cultural, economic and other dynamics and processes of significance within its geographical delimitations.

Areas of interest include, but are not restricted to, contemporary politics, history and nationalism, ethnic and national identity, security issues, democracy and civil society development, authoritarianism and post-authoritarian transition and transformations.

This year’s conference focuses on the everpresent and global struggle between ideas of democracy and authoritarianism, and how this battle unfolds in the RUCARR area. It deals with all levels of political and social contestation, from the global arena to local and everyday activities. We are very happy to greet as keynote speakers

Prof. Madina Tlostanova, Linköping University (Sweden): ”Democracy” – ”Authoritarianism” – ”Decoloniality”: A Decolonial Reflection of the Post-Truth World, and
Prof. Ghia Nodia, Director of the International School for Political Science at Ilia State University, Tbilisi: Common Past and Divergent Futures: Democracy and Autocracy in the Post-Communist Area

The conference is open to papers and panels addressing developments in individual countries or discussing events and processes from a more general point of view. It welcomes contributions from all over the spectrum of the social sciences and the humanities. Papers analyzing political discourses and rhetoric are particularly welcome, as are contributions providing a historical depth.  As usual, however, the organizers are also happy to welcome panels or papers on other topics across RUCARR’s sphere of activities.
